Collina Strada’s signature craftsmanship was accentuated in a creative exposé at her FW 16’ MADE NYFW Presentation at The Standard, Highline on February 13th, 2016. The space, linear and bright, effectively complimented the formation of models standing adjacent to the windowed wall at the front of the room. The light peering in from the windows cast a perfect shadow of the models on the white floor beneath them, their silhouettes melding together in the straight line on which they stood. The silver shimmer contoured faces glistened in the pool of illumination.
Shards of marble-like plexiglass were scattered along the white platform – stationary elements which contrasted the linear theme of the space. The models stood atop these shards manipulating, stomping, and even obtaining and consuming them in effortless acts of destruction. A few stood sipping and biting on clear plastic tubes; water flowing up and disappearing into their still bodies. Their hair, unruly and rugged, seemed to not be amenable to regulation or control yet, was tailored to each individual stature and overall look.
The garments were boxy and oversized in fit while still remaining conscience to the shape of the body. Floor length gowns, flared dress pants, leather jackets, and collared fur coats were just a few of the standout pieces included in the collection. Amongst the neutral color palette of blacks, whites, blues, and nudes, popped accents of silver and gold. The pointed toe, open-back flats were the cohesive element intertwining all of the looks; their metallic fire-like patterns connected the dependent variables of the space with the controlled.
As the presentation continued and the somewhat angst driven soundscape played, the models toyed with the space itself as well as their spatial relationship to each other. Entering in and out of a state of oblivion; they seemed approachable yet, untouchable. You could tell how hands on Strada was in the entire creative process, as she casually commanded the entire room with none other than dog in hand. Collina Strada’s NYFW FW 16’ Presentation was a creative magnification synonymous with gender androgyny.
