Attending the Greg Lauren show at NYFW September 2015 was an absolute treat. Greg Lauren, being related to Ralph Lauren by family origin, resembles his uncle in the clean sophistication of his garments. Greg Lauren’s show was filled with hues of navy blue, crisp whites, and a few pops of black, army green and bright orange. The designer was none-to-shy with his array of large hats that various models donned ever-so-fiercely, with their fists shoved nonchalantly into their pockets as they strutted the runway in total demure.
Yet, Greg Lauren is more than just freshness. He is casual edginess, to the max. What I love most about Greg Lauren’s designs is that you get a strong sense for his desert bohemian safari vibes with the hooded garments and baggy pants with scandalous cutouts at the hip line. You get the feeling that a very stylish bounty hunter, dressed to kill, would wear his garments. Dressed to kill. Literally.
One of his most memorable pieces was a sand-colored jacket with a jagged crocodile-like pattern on the back. The reptilian aspect of the jacket perfectly accentuated the theme of the night and was a nice “pop” of personality. Speaking of personality,Malin Akerman was seated in the front row, dressed to please. She was wearing an army green piece that blended perfectly with Lauren’s hues on the runway.
Let’s not forget the long, flowy gowns, in whites and blacks and greens, whose fabrics trailed behind the models like a tent canopy billowing in the wind. Perhaps not only for the bounty hunter, but also for the avant-garde explorer or safari-venturing type, or a mother of dragons, or simply a very Carmen San Diego archeologist, one might find his garments pleasing.
In fact, after viewing his show, I’m just dying to hop into a jeep and drive through the dusty plains and into the lush jungle with binoculars in hand. Imagine being swept away into the oasis that is Greg Lauren – back-dropped by hardy shrubbery and blistering sands. Greg Lauren’s garments deserve to be accompanied by a rugged landscape. Overall, the show was glistening with personality and sophistication and polished fierceness.
We will forget-you-not, Greg Lauren.
