In the 20th century, Coco Chanel made the ‘nautical look’ mainstream. But before the public began to sport such a Parisian look, we have to honor the breton stripes as part of the French Navy’s uniform. Military uniforms have inspired designers in the past decades, yet, they come and go. However, breton stripes never go out of style and have engraved the Parisian closet. They were always there, still is, and always will be.

There are no rules when it comes to wearing stripes. Why? Breton stripes are versatile, timeless, easy-to-wear and affordable. Stripes are quite flattering for all women. For those of us who are looking to strategically enhance our assets while putting into obscurity our “not so flattering” features, this is what to look for: thicker white lines against narrow dark lines is a slimming choice.

I’m wearing an old Tory Burch striped t-shirt, stolen from my mother’s closet…(shhh don’t tell), with my navy blue Palazzo pants also by Tory Burch (found in my ‘Hit Your Mother’s Closet’ style guide), over a vintage Max Mara coat. And the shoes are, well, you guessed it, this season’s Tory Burch esprandrilles.

Tip of the day: I altered my long Palazzo pants right above the ankle, the Parisian way… great way to modernize older pieces!
