Below are guidelines to help you know the best way to dress for your specific unique and beautiful shape:
In order to identify your body type, you will ned to measure how wide your shoulders, waist and hips are. Then imagine drawing a straight line bisecting your body horizontally.
The five body types are:
1. Hourglass: This is the most common body type, observed in nearly 40% of women. Women with hourglass figures have a narrow waist, but usually gain weight all over their body. Women on the thinner side have what is called the ‘Neat Hourglass’ figure and curvier women have the ‘Full Hourglass’ figure.

Women with an hourglass shape can easily pull off wrap dresses, pencil skirts or anything that emphasizes their waist. Mid-rise and high-rise jeans and skirts are also recommended. However, oversized clothes, too many layers and A-lined dresses are not typically as flattering on this body shape.
Celebrity Examples: Sarah Jessica Parker, Tyra Banks, Sophia Vergara
2. Rectangular: Straight, tall and skinny with a squarish shape, this is the figure you see on many socialites and runway models. The bone structure is very apparent and curves are comparatively fewer.
Owing it to their figure, females with a rectangular shape look great in skinny jeans, shorts and tight trousers. But since they don’t have a very defined waist or lots of curves, they should consider investing in sheath dresses, shorter skirts and peplum tops.
Celebrity Examples: Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson
1. Apple Shaped [Oval]: Ladies with an apple shape tend to be much curvier than others, especially in the central region [Chest, abdomen, waist, thigh]. Their arms are usually the narrowest part of their body.
If you have such a figure, then you’ll look fabulous in maxi skirts and A-lined dresses. Loose and unstructured garments [anything that’s flowy] will also flatter your figure. Peter pan collars and button-down shirts are also worth considering.
Celebrity Examples: Rebel Wilson, Octavia Spencer, Queen Latifa
4. Triangular [Pear Shape]: Depending on where you live, the triangular body is also called the pear shape. Here, the shoulders are narrow, hips are wide and thighs are often fuller.
Due to this shape, it makes sense to put more emphasis on the upper body through fitted and stylish tops. For the lower body, midi skirts, palazzos and loose-fitted jeans are the way to go. But make sure to draw less attention to your waist or hips by wearing a belt, cross body bag or bomber jacket.
Celebrity Examples: Kate Winslet, Julia Roberts, Lady Gaga
5. Inverted Triangle: The inverted triangle is the complete opposite of the triangular or pear-shaped body. Often found in sporty or athletic women, this body type is characterized by wide shoulders and a much narrower lower body.
Flared skirts [long and short], light-colored trousers, shorts and low-waist jeans complement triangular bodies. Conversely, dark trousers and anything that exposes too much of the upper body [especially shoulders] like off-the-shoulder tops, puff sleeves etc., should be avoided.
Celebrity Examples: Naomi Campbell, Kendall Jenner, Charlize Theron
